Yesterday I covered one of the biggest high school basketball games of my career. And it wasn’t even the playoffs! Monmouth-Roseville took on Rockridge in a game that was televised, and featured a junior commitment to Wisconsin. While only there for a half – to beat deadline – the place was electric and the game was bound going to come down to the wire. I shot this game for The Galesburg Register-Mail, whom I freelance for on top of my job at Knox College. I now have my fingers crossed in hopes to cover these two teams during the playoffs.
During this game, I think I have figured out a great new setup for basketball games. My 5D mk1 holds the 70-200mm for cross court action and my 7D holds the 50mm for the same side action. It turned out great for me as my space and movement was limited. I think some of my best shots came from my 5D despite its slow frame rate and limited ISO performance. Full-frame raw images produce a color unmatched by my crop sensor 7D.
